Maisha Matters permanently allows a family to move themselves out of poverty.

What we do

Our goal is to save lives, to empower families and to enable sustainability.

We take families, each with an at-risk baby, through a year-long programme to empower them to care for their own children and to live independently.

We start with a malnourished infant who has no lactating mother and who is at risk of malnutrition and death – and we end with an empowered, self-supporting family.

Here’s how.

Nutrition

We start with the most immediate need, by providing lifesaving formula milk to severely malnourished babies who have no other means of nutrition.

Crisis Support

We provide families with emergency items which immediately increases their quality of life. These could be mosquito nets, mattresses, blankets, clothes, cooking equipment, school fees, house rent or food parcels.

Training

We provide weekly training workshops for the caregivers in hygiene, nutrition, child development, HIV/AIDS, malaria prevention, water sanitation and basic first aid.

Empowerment

We work with families to help them set up a business in their community. With ongoing income, the family can provide for their families, being able to afford food, medicine, and school fees.

Independence

Working closely with families for up to 12 months allows us to really get to know their circumstances and tailor our holistic support to their unique needs.  The ultimate goal is for all families to be self-sufficient and able to look after their own families long into the future.

We work closely with families for a year, empowering them to live independently in the long term, so children can stay with their families—forever.
